Fiona Turner

Winemaker, BSc MSc (Hons)

Upon landing her self-described dream job with Matt Thomson at the newly formed Kiwi-Oeno consultancy, Fiona Turner knew her stimulating and varied wine background would be of great assistance.

As a graduate with a Masters in Biological Chemistry, Fiona first joined the wine industry by taking on the role of lab manager at contract winery Rapaura Vintners in Marlborough. This two-year taste of the trade cultivated an ardent desire to make wine, and she embarked on an enlightening series of travels, developing her winemaking expertise in California, USA, which naturally extended to a stint in wine sales at Oddbins in the UK. In due course she found herself back in New Zealand where she worked firstly at Sacred Hill winery in Hawkes Bay, and then at Marlborough’s Vavasour winery.

Together with her husband, Hamish, Fiona runs a 50-acre vineyard in the Blind River subregion of Marlborough. Fiona has been involved with several high level winery design and build projects in New Zealand, and she also sits on the board as the managing director of her own label, Tinpot Hut Wines. Not to mention Hamish and Fiona’s two busy, tractor-obsessed striplings, she has more than enough on her hands to occupy her time!

Fiona’s vast experience and prominent success as an accomplished winemaker, with her extensive knowledge of winery design, production, commerce, and the trade in general, make her an invaluable strength of KOWC.
