Alana McGettigan

Winemaker, BSc

Fitting in two vintages every year is not a problem for the ebullient Alana McGettigan. Born and raised in the town of Methven, Canterbury, she is the other “flying winemaker” in the Kiwi-Oeno force, making the trek to Europe every September to assist in managing the harvest and vintage in Northern and Central Italy, Sicily and Southern France.

Upon the completion of her degree in biochemistry and genetics from the University of Otago in 2000 she went on to complete a Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University in 2001. Subsequently there was no waiting around, no big O.E., Alana dived straight into the realm of winemaking. The O.E., as it transpired, was opportunely fitted into her future job description – now very much a permanent, annual one. Her first overseas vintage was in Sicily, at the age of 23 and she has been going back ever since.

KOWC gained the experience, talent and charms of Alana in 2005, her already well-travelled identity slid perfectly into the dynamic consultancy. The qualifications and expansive industry experience she has gained allow Alana to offer a very meaningful contribution to any wine production business. Her technical skills, from quality-based production in the vineyard through to bottling, are exceptional and her well-founded understanding of what is required to produce high quality wine in a competitive market make her a vital piece in the consultancy jigsaw.

Moreover Alana is also a fantastic cheesemaker and from time to time appeases the KOWC office’s insatiable desire for Mozzarella.
